Ma a világon több gyermek hal meg rákban, mint bármely más betegségben. Magyarországon jelenleg is mintegy 2000 rákos gyermek küzd az életéért. A daganatos gyermekbetegségek még nem is olyan régen sokszor végzetesnek bizonyultak; az 1950-es években a rákos gyermekeknek mindössze 10%-a élte túl a betegséget. Mára a rákos gyermekek 75%-a sikeresen gyógyítható, de a betegség így is pusztító hatással van a gyermekek és családjuk életére.
